Microneedling Q & A
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling rejuvenates your skin using very fine needles called microneedles to gently puncture your skin and stimulate a healing response, which in turn triggers collagen and elastin production.
Collagen and elastin are proteins that are essential for healthy skin, yet their production declines as you get older. As a result, your skin loses tone and wrinkles develop. As microneedling boosts these structural proteins, your skin becomes stronger and more resilient.
What Skin Problems are Treated with Microneedling?
Microneedling effectively improves cosmetic concerns such as:
- Loose skin
- Fine lines
- Brown spots
- Acne scars
- Large pores
Microneedling can restore skin anywhere on your body, but two of the most popular areas are the face and chest.
What are the Benefits of SkinPen® Microneedling?
The SkinPen is a cutting-edge microneedling device that delivers tiny needle pricks vertically. Most microneedling tools roll the microneedles over your skin. SkinPen’s vertical delivery can reach small areas that rollers can’t, such as the contours around your nose.
With the SkinPen, your provider at Mohs Surgery & Dermatology Center can also customize your treatment by adjusting the length of the needle to match your skin’s thickness.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelets are rich sources of proteins called growth factors. When your body sustains an injury, platelets migrate to the area, where they trigger new cell growth and accelerate healing. PRP is plasma that contains a higher concentration of platelets than your normal blood.
PRP is made in the office from your own blood. Your doctor draws a sample and processes it in a centrifuge that separates platelets from other blood components. These concentrated platelets are used for your PRP treatment.
What is Microneedling with PRP?
After your provider performs microneedling with the SkinPen, they apply PRP to the area. As the platelets enter the carefully created wounds, they dramatically enhance your results by doing their job: stimulating the production of collagen, skin cells, blood vessels, and other tissues needed for healthy skin.
How Does Microneedling with PRP Treat Hair Loss?
When microneedling and PRP are used to target areas of your scalp affected by hair loss, the growth factors stimulate hair follicles to grow new hair. PRP can effectively increase the number of new hairs, slow hair loss, and increase hair thickness.
